Updated Lean Portfolio Management and Value Stream Coordination
If you’ve been around us for awhile, you know we know that SAFe is a work in progress, a living breathing thing—improving, progressing. While for practical reasons, we obviously can’t change the SAFe Big Picture every time we have a new idea (sometimes I miss those days!), we can and do innovate behind the BP as rapidly as our knowledge evolves.
Currently, we have many active areas of new and ongoing IP development—SAFe in Gov, compliance and high assurance, scalable DevOps and continuous delivery, Agile architecture, and more—many of which will see the market in the months to come, primarily in the form of articles, courseware, and SPC toolkits.
One area that I have been working on personally (‘struggling a bit’ also comes to mind) is the new Lean Portfolio Management domain. Our ideas didn’t quite settle out prior to the 4.5 release in June of this year, and we have made a few improvements since then. We’ve also received a lot of input on that topic since the significant 4.5 update.
Finally, we’ve had the time to more thoroughly revisit the LPM responsibilities and better clarify some of our intent, as well as incorporating what we’ve learned as SAFe makes a more significant impact in the portfolio levels of the larger enterprise. We’ve also had a chance to test the new thinking in a number of forums, so it’s time to go live with a more significant update. To that end, we’ve updated the Lean Portfolio Management article, and its companion article, Coordinating Value Streams.
If you are fairly new to this space, you won’t see much difference between old and new—and in any case, the new ideas are backwards compatible with the former versions so you won’t see much impact. But if you’ve been active at this level, you’ll see a clarified and updated set of responsibilities, and indeed a new portfolio ‘role triad’ for those who are managing large portfolios.
Hopefully this helps move you along on your SAFe journey. And as always, comments are welcome here.
Stay SAFe (and keep that portfolio Lean).

PS: For you SPCs, the LPM toolkit has now been updated as well.
